How Can I Keep My House?

Monday, Nov 30, 2009

Question: I filed for bankruptcy in 2009 for my credit cards and one car. I need advice what to do to not lose my house?

Answer: Unfortunately, you have not provided me with much information to best answer your question. If you are struggling with the mortgage payments you may want to contact your lender and look at possibly doing a loan modification. A loan modification can lower your monthly payments on your mortgage. See the http://makinghomeaffordable.gov/”>Making Home Affordable web site to get started on a mortgage modification.

You mentioned that you filed for bankruptcy in 2009. Chapter 13 bankruptcy is specifically
designed to keep homeowners in their homes, whereas Chapter 7 is not. I hope you consulted with an attorney when you filed. If so, I encourage you to speak with your attorney regarding your
mortgage and bankruptcy, and whether the bankruptcy has any effect on your mortgage.

I hope this information helps you Find, Save, and Learn.

Best,
Bill
