My Home Has Been Foreclosed. When Should I Terminate My Utilities?

Tuesday, Dec 22, 2009

Question: We have vacated our home and the mortgage company has just posted a foreclosure sign on the property and a Do Not Trespass on the door. At what point should we terminate the utilities?

Answer: Generally speaking, once the property has been taken over by the bank you are no longer in possession of the property. That being the case the utilities should cease around the same time you have ceased owning the property. It is recommended that you contact your utility company and inform them of the situation. Let them know that the home has been foreclosed and the bank is
now in possession of the home. The utility company will need to make arrangements with the bank if they need to have access to the property. It would not be in your best interest to continue to be
charged for utilities if you no longer occupy the property.
