Question:

A car company garnished my check for about six months then just stopped. They stopped in Jan. of this year. I stayed at that job til Oct. of this year and heard nothing from the company. I just started a new job in Sept. and just learned that the company has issued another garnishment on me. I am wondering can they go after my wages from my job again? Now they tried to levy my bank account in the past but I did not have any thing in it and I know they can go after my bank account again but not sure how many times they can go after my job. I live in TN. Thanks!

Answer:

Garnishment is the withholding of your wages in response to a court order to repay a creditor. The short answer is that if you have two jobs a creditor can garnish your wages at both jobs. Ditto for three, and so on.

Similarly, if the creditor has a reason to believe your account has funds, it can attempt to levy your account again.

The US Dept. of Labor offers several resources explaining wage garnishment rules in general, and Title III, Consumer Credit Protection Act (CCPA), specifically.

To learn more about the rights of creditors and debtors in collections, see Collections Advice. To learn more about wage garnishment, see Garnishment on Unsecured Debt.

I wish you the best of luck. I hope that the information I have provided helps you Find. Learn. Save.
