However, contrary to popular belief, that is not the origin of the name, which was used for a land grant (Rancho Azusa) prior to Anglo settlement; the "A to Z" slogan was not adopted until after World War II.

The name Azusa is derived from the name the Tongva Indians gave the land: Asuksa-gna.
