Will Late Payments on My Utility Bills Hurt My Credit?

Will Late Payments on My Utility Bills Hurt My Credit?

This typically depends on how far past due you have gone with your payments. Generally speaking, your utility bills such as electricity, water, etc., do not report on credit reports that are generated by the three major bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax). However, if the account is sent to a collection agency there is a strong possibility that it will appear on your credit report, and negatively impact it.

An option you have is to contact the utility company you have an account with and ask them if they notify the credit bureaus of the lay payments.

To learn more about credit reports I recommend you see our Credit Report Resources section.

I hope this information helps you Find, Save, and Learn.

Best,

Bill

Can I be denied local landline phone service by Verizon if I owe them money from over 4 years ago. I live in Pennsylvania and even checked into Comcast to see if they have service here and they have to send out a technician. If my only choice is Verizon what are my alternatives. I don't want to use skype...I need a reliable landline phone service to receive incoming phone calls for a business I am doing from home. I will be receiving incoming phone calls to this number for customer service related issues and the company I will be working for informed me that I need a landline phone. Any suggestions.

I don't know if you can be denied phone service for money you owe from four years ago. It certainly seems possible that you could be prevented from opening another account with a utility company that you did not pay as agreed previously. I suggest that you speak with the Pennsylvania Office of Consumer Advocate. Their official Web site states, "Whenever consumers have questions or problems with their electric, natural gas, telecommunications, water or wastewater service, the OCA (Office of Consumer Advocate) is there to help." You can reach them by phone at 717-783-5048 or toll free 800-684-6560 (PA only).
