I have mortgage life insurance and mortgage disability insurance through my mortgage holder. Is it better to have independent coverage?

I have life and disability on my mortgage and line of credit. The payments are about $290.00 monthly. My insurance agent has suggested that I buy an insurance policy instead of paying this money out to a bank. He says that I could get a life policy and have this definite amount compared to the bank who would only pay what is owing. My husband and I have life insurance already and have disability insurance with our employers. This does seem to make sense but I am nervous to cancel this insurance with my bank. What is your opinion?

The mortgage disability insurance will pay your monthly mortgage payment if you suffer a disability, as defined by the policy, and can no longer work.

I realize you said you have mortgage and disability insurance you purchase from your bank. I suggest you double-check the terms of your policy. Is this really mortgage and disability insurance that benefits you and your survivors? Or, do you really have private mortgage insurance (PMI) that benefits the bank should you default? I am wondering... we have our own insurance, but a few years ago we learned that our latest mortgage holder has taken out mortgage insurance on my husband, that will pay them the balance owed on our home if he dies. We have no second mortgage, and the only reason our mortgage has changed hands several times, is because it was sold, and the second buyer bank later was bought out by a third company. This third company has the mortgage insurance. My questions are is this legal, and in the event of my husband's death, does their payoff from their policy effect me and my ability to retain my home? Our loan was an FMHA loan, and we have been paying 14 years on our 30 year loan. My husband is also only 51. I have looked and looked, but have not been able to find ay good info about a mortgage compnay doing this. Thanks.

I understand that you have some time of term insurance, to cover the balance of the loan in case of the death of the insured party. I would be surprised if the bank is paying the premiums on its own. If you are paying for this, then you should have been informed of this and signed a legal document, indicating the terms of the insurance policy and the price you are paying. I recommend that you speak with the servicer and request full disclosure of the policy and the amounts you are paying.

I would like to have this insurance for me and my husband. He is the main name on the mortgage and if any thing happens to him this home needs to be covered and so does he.

Contact an insurance broker or two and shop for the policy that best meets you and your husband's needs. You should discuss both policies that focus on the mortgage and more general life insurance policies.
