Bill pay services can make paying monthly bills easier and save time and money. The best online bill payment service is one that allows you to pay all of your bills in one place, safely and securely, with minimal or no fees.

MyCheckFree is an online payment center that's powered by Fiserv. It's one option to consider if you want to streamline paying bills. Our MyCheckFree review offers a closer look at how this service provider works.

What is the MyCheckFree Bills Pay Service?

MyCheckFree is a personal bill pay center that allows you to schedule payments for hundreds of e-bills online. When you sign up for MyCheckFree, you decide which e-bills you want to pay and Scout, the bill retriever, finds them for you.

You access a personalized payment center online and payments are sent securely. The CheckFree Guarantee ensures that your bill payments arrive safely and on-time, so you don't have to worry about late payments or your sensitive information being hacked.

How does it work?

MyCheckFree is powered by Fiserv. You can sign up online to create a free account, which takes about five minutes. To create your account, you'll need to provide your:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Account information for the bills you want to pay online

You'll also need to link a checking account or money market account to schedule bill payments. To do that, you'll need to share your account number and routing number.

Note: MyCheckFree does not support credit cards for bill payments.

Once you've set up your account, you'll be able to receive, view and pay e-bills online. When a bill arrives, you can view the amount and due date, then schedule a payment from your linked bank account.

MyCheckFree recommends paying any bills you already have outstanding when you sign up, as it can take up to one billing cycle for your first e-bill to arrive. That way, you don't risk paying late or missing a payment.

When you have a new e-bill to pay, you'll receive an email from MyCheckFree. You can download and print those bill copies for your records if you don't already receive paper statements from your biller.

Pro tip: MyCheckFree begins processing payments two days before the bill due date so it's a good idea to schedule payments in advance to ensure they arrive on time.

You can choose one-time or recurring payments and MyCheckFree allows you to schedule them up to one year in advance. There's no charge to schedule payments, though you may pay a fee if you need to send a payment the same day a bill is due.

What bills can MyCheckFree manage?

Fiserv powers e-bills for hundreds of companies across a variety of industries. You can choose which billers to add when you sign up and create your account.

Some of the billers you can pay with MyCheckFree include:

  • AARP Life Insurance.
  • Allstate Insurance.
  • Ally Financial auto loans.
  • American Express.
  • AT&T.
  • Bank of America credit cards, home loans and vehicle loans.
  • Comcast.
  • Cox Communications.
  • DIRECTV.
  • Lowe's credit cards.
  • Macy's.
  • Progressive Insurance.
  • Synchrony Bank credit cards.
  • U.S. Cellular.

In addition to cell phone providers, credit card companies and insurance companies, you can also use MyCheckFree to pay utility bills. The platform allows you to schedule payments to a number of electric, water and gas service providers.

There are some bills you won't be able to pay, however. MyCheckFree doesn't support payments to:

  • Student loan servicers.
  • Streaming subscription services.
  • Gym memberships.

If you have any of those bills pay you'll need to use an alternate payment method. For instance, you might use your bank's online bill pay service or pay directly through the biller's website.

What does MyCheckFree cost?

MyCheckFree is a free bill pay service. There's no monthly maintenance fee, which some online bill pay service providers charge.

The MyCheckFree website notes that fees may apply for same-day payments, but it doesn't specify what those fees are. Scheduling payments in advance can help you avoid added fees.

Can MyCheckFree save money?

Using MyCheckFree to pay bills online could save you money in a few ways.

For example, you could save money on:

  • Postage and paper checks.
  • Late payment fees, if you're scheduling bills to be paid on time.
  • Bill pay fees, since there's no monthly charge.

MyCheckFree can also save you time. Instead of writing out checks or logging in to multiple biller accounts online, you can schedule bill payments all in one place.

MyCheckFree won't negotiate to lower your bills, so you won't get any savings that way.

If that's something you're interested in, look into bill negotiation services. There are companies that can review your bills, help you cut out unnecessary subscriptions, trim bank fees and get a better deal on cell phone, cable and internet services.

Is MyCheckFree legit?

MyCheckFree is a legitimate company that offers bill pay services online.

The CheckFree Guarantee from Fiserv ensures that your payments are sent safely and reliably. If your payment arrives late, Fiserv bears responsibility for any late payment fees, up to $50.

Fiserv is subject to monitoring and oversight from the Securities and Exchange Commision (SEC), the Federal Reserve, the U.S. Postal Service and NACHA, the electronic payments association. So it's a trusted company in the online bill pay space.

It's safe to use MyCheckFree to pay bills online.

Fiserv treats personal information as confidential and does not sell or rent it to third-party companies without your consent. The company uses Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology to encrypt personal information.
