Oak View Law Group: Top Features

Oak View Law Group stands out for one main reason: it's a law firm, not a sales-driven settlement company. Its attorneys can step in directly if a creditor sues you. Here's what else stands out.

Established company

OVLG has been registered with the California State Bar and the California Chamber of Commerce since it opened in 2007.

Program length

OVLG's average finish time, 21 months, runs shorter than the industry's usual 24-to-48-month range.

Eligible debts and minimum enrollment

Unsecured debt. You need at least $5,000 in unsecured debt to sign up.

Accreditation

OVLG holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. OVLG says on its website that it has IAPDA membership; it's not an ACDR member.

Free consultation

OVLG offers a free first call. There's no obligation to sign up.

No upfront fees

Federal law requires this. OVLG can't charge a fee until it settles one of your accounts. You also have to approve the deal and make a payment on it first.

Is Oak View Law Group legit?

Yes, on the basics: OVLG is a licensed law firm. It's registered with the California State Bar under license #288349.

Here's the fuller picture:

  • BBB rating: A+.
  • IAPDA and ACDR: No ACDR membership. OVLG says on its website that it has IAPDA membership. Attorneys like OVLG's usually hold their credentials through state bar associations, so this gap isn't a fair strike against a law firm.
  • FTC and CFPB: No enforcement action names Oak View Law Group specifically. That's not proof of a clean record. Neither agency's public database can rule out unpublished or pending cases by company name.

Ratings

Ratings siteRating
BBBA+ letter grade; 5.0 out of 5 from 5 customer reviews
Trustpilot3.4 out of 5, 16 reviews

Both review counts are small. Treat either score as a data point, not a full verdict.

Pros
  • A lawyer, not a sales rep, handles your case—and may step in if you get sued
  • A low $5,000 minimum to sign up
  • A shorter average time to complete and a higher rate of forgiveness than than many other programs

Cons
  • Fees run up to 25% of your enrolled debt, which is at the higher end
  • Does not disclose states of operation

How much does Oak View Law Group cost?

OVLG charges a fee of up to 25% of your enrolled debt. You pay it only after OVLG settles an account, you approve the deal, and a payment goes through. There's no separate sign-up or setup fee. A bounced payment costs $30. An optional legal consultation is $100 an hour.

Here's a simple example, based on OVLG's own numbers, with a tax line added:

FactorAmount
Enrolled debt$10,000
Settlement reached (50% of the debt, example only)$5,000
Amount you save before fees$5,000
OVLG's fee (up to 25% of the enrolled debt)$2,500
Possible taxable income on the forgiven amountPay tax on up to $5,000, unless you qualify for an exception

OVLG says its average settlement is 41.23% of what's owed. That means clients could save 58.77% before fees. It also says 72.7% of clients get at least one account settled. About 24.57% drop out before finishing. OVLG reports an 84% satisfaction rate. These numbers come from OVLG itself. Results vary, and none of this is a guarantee.

Important considerations when choosing debt settlement

Debt settlement could help you get rid of your debt, but it isn't without risks to consider first.

Credit score damage

Settling debt often leads to credit score damage if you stop making payments on your debts while you save for settlement. Additionally, a settled account can stay on your credit report for about seven years. That clock starts at your first missed payment, not the settlement date.

Taxes on forgiven debt

Forgiven debt usually counts as taxable income, unless you qualify for an insolvency exception. This means you owe more than the value of everything you own at the time of settlement. You'd claim the insolvency exception on IRS Form 982. Consult a tax professional for details on your specific situation.

Lawsuit risk

Unlike bankruptcy, debt settlement doesn't stop lawsuits automatically. Creditors can still call, send letters, or sue you while you're enrolled. Ask about OVLG's policy if you're sued while enrolled in a program.

Oak View Law Group customer service and satisfaction

  • BBB: A+ rating, 5.0 out of 5 across 5 reviews. Reviewers often name a specific rep and praise how fast they responded and stopped collection calls.
  • Trustpilot: 3.4 out of 5 from 16 reviews—notably lower than the BBB score. Both scores are based on very few reviews.
