  • Consumer review scores are poor on BBB and Trustpilot.

Boeing Employees' Credit Union (BECU) was formed by Boeing employees, and it still operates with Boeing employees front and center. Membership, which is required to get a BECU personal loan, is open to Boeing employees wherever they reside, from Washington to South Carolina.

The BECU personal loan is a fixed-rate, unsecured loan with amounts from $1,000 to $50,000 and terms of up to 84 months. Loans can be used for a range of purposes, from moving expenses to debt consolidation.

BECU personal loan top features

BECU’s personal loans are fairly flexible, but have some limitations to note.

Loan amounts: $1,000 to $50,000: BECU's $1,000 minimum is lower than many national lenders, and the $50,000 ceiling could cover most consolidation and large-purchase needs.

APR range: 9.74% to 19.99%: Well-qualified borrowers with loans of $5,000 or more may qualify for the low end. The high-end rate is still competitive, however, especially compared to the 35.99% cap of some mainstream lenders.

No origination fee, no application fee: BECU does not deduct an origination fee from the disbursement, and there is no charge to apply.

No prepayment penalty: You can pay off the loan early without a fee.

Repayment terms up to 84 months (7 years): Longer terms lower the monthly payment but raise the total interest paid over the life of the loan.

Time to fund: BECU deposits the funds into a BECU account once you return the signed loan agreement. This could be as soon as the same day as approval or the next business day.

Credit needed: BECU doesn’t publish a minimum credit score, or any credit score requirements in general. The personal loan page only names credit history, verifiable income, and a manageable debt-to-income (DTI) ratio as the factors the credit union weighs.

Soft-pull prequalification: There’s no risk-free prequalification here. BECU doesn’t provide a way to check your rate without a full application, which means a hard credit inquiry that could ding your score for up to a year or two.

States and eligibility: You can only get a loan if you’re a BECU member. Membership is limited to people who live, work or attend school in Washington State or a few counties in other states, are members of certain organizations, or work for companies like Boeing or a credit union.

Loan Reprice Program: Members who pay on time and improve their credit may automatically receive a lower rate. BECU says it automatically reduced rates on 46,603 loans in 2025 through the program.

Personal loan payment protection: This optional service provides assistance in times of financial hardship, like involuntary job loss or disability. The program has a separate monthly cost.

Where BECU could improve

Access is a key issue for BECU loans, as is customer service based on online reviews.

BECU membership is required to get a personal loan through the credit union. Eligibility is not universal, mainly covering Washington state as well as a few other geographic areas. You could also potentially become a member if you join an eligible association online.

Even if you can, though, you might think twice before choosing a BECU personal loan since you can’t check your rates without a full application. That means a hard inquiry, which could hurt your credit score. It’s probably a good idea to get quotes from at least two or three other lenders that use a soft-pull prequalification before applying with BECU. A soft inquiry won’t hurt your credit score.

You might not be happy even if you gain membership and are approved for a loan. Both BBB and TrustPilot reviews are largely negative, with low scores and lots of complaints about service for bank accounts, loans, and credit cards.

Qualifying for a BECU personal loan

Step one in getting a BECU loan is to be (or become) a member. BECU membership is only open to people who:

  • Live, work, worship, or attend school in Washington state, or in select counties in Oregon and Idaho.
  • Live in South Carolina and donate $1 or more to the BECU Foundation.
  • Work for BECU, Boeing Company, or an eligible credit union.
  • Are a member, donor, volunteer, employee, or retiree of the UW, WSU, BECU Foundation, GoWest Foundation, KEXP, or Sea Hawkers associations.

The latter could be a way in for a lot of people as several eligible associations can be joined online for a small donation or membership fee.

Once you’re a member, you still need to meet the loan requirements. BECU names three factors on its personal loan page: credit history, verifiable income, and a manageable debt-to-income (DTI) ratio. The lender does not define “manageable” on its site.

Your DTI is all your monthly debt payments divided by your gross (pre-tax) monthly income. Housing costs (rent or mortgage payment including property tax and insurance) are considered monthly debt payments.

Credit score and income requirements

BECU doesn’t publish a minimum credit score for the personal loan. Indeed, the credit union doesn’t even provide a general credit range.

While that wouldn’t be a big deal if you could prequalify, BECU doesn’t offer a soft-inquiry prequalification option. So the only way to find out if a BECU personal loan is available is to apply and absorb the hard credit inquiry.

Co-signer and joint options

BECU allows joint applicants for personal loans, but not co-signers. The difference is that joint applicants share both responsibility for and rights to the loan funds, while a co-signer has no rights to the money.

How to apply for a BECU personal loan

BECU offers several ways to apply:

  • Existing members can apply through Online Banking under "Members Log In & Apply"
  • People who are not yet members can join and apply at the same time online
  • Apply in-person at a Neighborhood Financial Center
  • Apply through Video Banking
  • Apply by phone at 844-232-8562 (BECULOAN), which is BECU's dedicated loan line. The loan line is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Pacific time.

Most members receive a loan decision within 24 hours.

How applying affects your credit

BECU doesn’t offer soft-pull prequalification, so you need to fill out a formal application to see your rates. A loan application triggers a hard credit inquiry, which could ding your score a few points for up to a year or two.

If you want to compare rates without that impact, check with other lenders that offer soft credit checks so you can see an estimate first.

As with other new credit, a new BECU personal loan could impact your average account age and credit mix. On-time loan payments could help you build a positive payment history over time.

Documents you'll need

BECU doesn’t publish a specific document checklist for the personal loan. Expect to provide proof of income and employment, plus membership documentation if you are joining and applying at the same time.

Loan approval and funding from BECU

BECU says most members receive a loan decision within 24 hours of applying. It could take longer if the credit union needs more information to make a decision.

For repayment, BECU allows automatic transfer from BECU deposits, direct deposit, personal check, draft, electronic funds transfer, or wire. You can manage payments in the BECU mobile app and Online Banking.

Funding timeline

Once approved, funds are deposited into a BECU account after you return the signed loan agreement. If you do not yet have a BECU account, you need to open one as part of joining.

BECU customer service and satisfaction

BECU's general member line is 800-233-2328, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Pacific time. The dedicated loan line, 844-232-8562, keeps the same hours.

Members can also reach BECU through Video Banking, secure Messenger inside Online Banking and the mobile app, and in person at more than 65 Neighborhood Financial Centers, including two in South Carolina.

BECU offers a mobile app on both iOS and Android that supports mobile check deposit, transfers, bill pay, loan payments, and FICO Score viewing. The app has a 4.6 rating in the Google Play store and a 4.8 rating in the Apple store.

BECU's licensing and track record

BECU carries NMLS ID 490518 and is federally insured by NCUA. BBB gives the credit union an A+ rating and lists it as BBB Accredited since October 28, 1988. No CFPB, Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI), or NCUA enforcement action against the institution has been found since 2020.

What customers say

Looking at online reviews, BECU customers aren’t happy. The BBB customer score sits at 1.25 out of 5 across 51 reviews, and Trustpilot at 1.5 out of 5 across about 170 reviews. Negative reviews concentrate on account freezes, payment processing, and customer service being poor.

For context, BECU has an A+ rating with the BBB, but that reflects the credit union’s replies to negative reviews, not their customer service.

When a BECU personal loan might be the best choice

A BECU personal loan might be worth considering if:

  • You are already a BECU member consolidating debt. With no origination fee and a fixed APR starting at 9.74% for well-qualified borrowers, BECU could be a strong consolidation option for a member with strong credit.
  • You are eligible for membership and need a small loan. The $1,000 minimum is unusually low. Someone eligible to join who needs a small fixed-payment loan may find BECU a good alternative to more expensive small-dollar loans.
  • You want a longer payoff runway. Terms up to 84 months could lower the monthly payment for a member willing to pay more total interest over time.
  • You want to avoid fees. No origination fee, no application fee, and no prepayment penalty may appeal to someone who wants the option to pay early without cost.

BECU is likely not the right fit if you live outside the membership footprint and don’t want to join through an affiliation, or if you want to compare rates with a soft-pull prequalification before committing to a hard inquiry. In those cases, comparing top personal loan lenders may be the better first step.
