Huntington Bank is a regional bank that has a range of banking and credit products, including both an unsecured personal loan and a deposit-secured personal loan. Huntington says loans can be used for a range of purposes, including debt consolidation, home repairs, or to fund a major purchase.

Huntington Bank personal loan top features

A personal loan from Huntington Bank could work well for some borrowers, but not all. Consider these features.

Loan amounts. Huntington offers unsecured personal loans up to $50,000 with no collateral required, along with a deposit-secured option that can go up to $500,000 when backed by a Huntington savings account, CD, or money market account.

APR range. Rates run from 8.72% to as high as 25.00% APR for the unsecured option, or 7.01% to 25.00% for the secured personal loan.

Origination fee. Huntington doesn’t advertise an origination fee on its unsecured personal loan, and no fee schedule is published on the product page. Borrowers should still verify if there are any fees before accepting a loan.

No prepayment penalty. Paying the loan off early carries no extra charge.

Delay first payment. Huntington allows you to choose your first payment date up to 60 days after loan closing.

Repayment terms. Huntington advertises “terms that fit your budget,” but the bank isn’t clear on what those terms actually are. You’ll need to go through the prequalification flow to see estimated rates and term options.

State availability. The loan is offered in 22 states, mostly across the Midwest.

Soft-pull rate check. You can check your estimated rate through prequalification that uses a soft credit inquiry through the "Get Personalized Rates" tool. A soft inquiry doesn’t impact your credit score.

Where Huntington Bank can improve

Access is an issue for Huntington Bank personal loans, as is transparency:

  • Narrow state map. You can only get a Huntington Personal loan if you live in one of the 22 available states.
  • Missing transparency. A lot of details are missing from the public page, including what term options are available. Huntington also doesn’t disclose what credit scores you need to be approved, or how fast a loan funds if you get to that point.

Another sore point seems to be customer satisfaction. Reviews for the bank are overwhelmingly negative on both BBB and TrustPilot review sites, though they apply to the bank overall and aren’t all specifically about personal loans.

Qualifying for a Huntington Bank personal loan

You can only get a Huntington Bank personal loan if you live in an eligible state. This includes 22 states, concentrated in the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin) and the Southeast (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas), plus Colorado, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

Then things get less clear. Huntington doesn’t publish a minimum credit score for its personal loan, instead saying it considers:

  • Credit score
  • Credit history
  • Income
  • Employment
  • Debt-to-income (DTI) ratio

Your debt-to-income ratio is all your monthly debt payments divided by your gross (pre-tax) monthly income. Housing payments, like rent or mortgage, are included in debt payments. A good rule of thumb or DTI is to aim for 43% or lower.

Another thing not clear from the bank’s site is whether it accepts co-signers or joint applications on the personal loan, so anyone who needs one should ask before applying.

Credit score and income requirements

The bank doesn’t publish a minimum credit score. You’ll need to check your rate through prequalification to see if Huntington is potentially a good fit.

How to apply for a Huntington Bank loan

Borrowers can apply for an unsecured personal loan from Huntington Bank online, in person at a bank branch, or by phone through the lending center at 877-587-8051. For secured loans, you’ll need to visit a local branch.

At application, the bank asks for:

  • Social Security or Taxpayer ID number
  • Personal identification
  • Income information
  • Employment history

You’ll also need to consent to a credit check. If you’re going the deposit-secured route, you may also need to provide information about your qualifying account(s).

How applying affects your credit

You can check your estimated rates and terms through the “Get Personalized Rates” tool on the loan page. Huntington says this uses a soft credit inquiry that won’t hurt your credit score.

Once you apply, Huntington Bank will run a hard credit check that could ding your score by a few points for up to a year. This is standard for personal loans.

Opening a new loan could impact your average account age and credit mix, as it would with any new credit product. On-time loan payments could help you build positive payment history over time.

Loan approval and funding from Huntington Bank

Huntington doesn’t offer any information about approval time or provide a funding timeline on its personal loan page. Borrowers who need money within a specific window should ask when applying in-branch or by calling the lending center.

Funding methods themselves are also not specified on the product page, but most lenders do an electronic transfer to your checking account. Once the loan is funded, borrowers can manage it and make payments five ways:

  • Online through huntington.com
  • Through the Huntington Mobile app
  • By phone
  • At a Huntington branch
  • By mail

One interesting feature is flexibility in your first payment. The loan may also be structured so the first payment is due up to 60 days after closing, which could give borrowers a longer runway to line up cash flow.

Huntington Bank: customer service and satisfaction

Huntington offers several ways to reach a representative:

  • Lending center: 877-587-8051
  • General customer service: 800-480-2265, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern, daily
  • Site chat and secure messaging: Through the "Ask Us" tool on huntington.com
  • Mobile app: Available on iOs and Android
  • In-person: Full-service branches and ATMs in 21 states

Huntington Bank's licensing and track record

The facts on Huntington's licensing and public record:

  • NMLS registration: Huntington National Bank is registered under NMLS #402436
  • CFPB / FTC actions: No CFPB or FTC personal-loan enforcement action against Huntington was found in the research period.
  • Other regulatory action: In October 2023, the US Attorneys' Offices for the Southern District of Ohio, Northern District of Ohio, and Eastern District of Michigan reached an Americans with Disabilities Act settlement with Huntington related to online-banking access for Social Security Representative Payees serving beneficiaries with disabilities. Huntington denied liability.

What customers say

On the technical side, the Huntington Bank mobile app seems well-liked at least. Users give it an average 4.8 out of 5 rating in both the Google Play store and the Apple app store.

On the banking side, Huntington Bank overall has pretty poor customer reviews, though most aren’t about the personal loan product specifically. BBB customer reviews average 1.08 out of 5 across 415 reviews. Trustpilot reviews average 1.2 out of 5 across 296 reviews. Many reviews cite lack of communication, problems making payments, and issues with accounts being locked or frozen. Note that consumers are far more likely to leave negative reviews in general.

When a Huntington Bank personal loan might be a good choice

Huntington's personal loan may work best for a few specific borrower profiles:

  • An existing Huntington customer who prefers to manage a loan alongside their other accounts, keeping lending and deposits in one place.
  • A borrower who values in-branch service in the Midwest footprint.
  • A Huntington customer who wants a secured borrowing option that uses savings as collateral.
