Marcus by Goldman Sachs Loan October 2026 Review
At Bills.com, we strive to help you make financial decisions with confidence. While many of the products reviewed are from our Service Providers, including those with which we are affiliated and those that compensate us, our evaluations are never influenced by them.
You searched for Marcus personal loans and came up empty. Don’t blame Google. Marcus by Goldman Sachs doesn't make new personal loans anymore.
Goldman Sachs stopped making new Marcus loans in January 2023, and Marcus now focuses on savings accounts and CDs.
You'll need another lender for a fixed-rate personal loan. Here are four to compare.
Marcus personal loan alternatives
Marcus built its loan for borrowers who wanted to pay off credit card debt. It offered fixed rates and no fees. These four lenders serve similar borrowers. Look at the high end of each APR range first. That's closer to what you might see if your credit isn't top tier.
| Lender | APR | Loan amount | Term | Origination fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discover | Up to 24.99% (from 6.99%) | $2,500 to $40,000 | 36 to 84 months | None |
| LightStream | Up to 25.44% (maximum) | $5,000 to $100,000 | 24 to 240 months, by loan purpose | None |
| SoFi | Up to 35.49% (from 6.99%, with discounts) | $5,000 to $100,000 | 2 to 7 years | Up to 9.99% on partner-bank loans; 0% to 7% on SoFi Bank loans |
| Happen Bank | Up to 35.99% (from 5.96%) | $1,000 to $75,000 | 24 to 84 months | 0% to 8% |
Discover as of October 27, 2026. LightStream disclosure based on April 1 to June 30, 2026 data. SoFi as of October 2, 2026. Happen Bank as of July 6, 2026. Rates subject to change.
Here's a quick way to narrow it down. Choose Discover if you want no fees and need $40,000 or less. Pick LightStream if you need more than $40,000 and have strong credit, since its lowest rates require excellent credit. Select SoFi if you want a large loan and may bank with SoFi for the extra discount. Choose Happen Bank if you need a smaller loan or want to apply with a co-borrower. Then compare the actual offers, since your rate depends on your credit.
Discover personal loan
Discover is the closest match to what Marcus offered. It charges no fees of any kind, and loans top out at $40,000. That's the same cap Marcus had.
Discover can pay many of your creditors directly. It can't pay off Capital One accounts, though, including Discover and Capital One credit cards. You'll need at least $25,000 in individual or household income.
Checking your rate generates a soft inquiry. A soft inquiry (soft pull) does not affect your credit score. If you go ahead and apply, Discover runs a hard inquiry.
LightStream personal loan
LightStream is Truist Bank's online lending arm. It charges no fees and lends $5,000 to $100,000. Its maximum APR is 25.44%. Without AutoPay set up before funding, rates run 0.50 percentage points higher.
LightStream also runs a Rate Beat program. Say another lender approves you for a lower rate on an unsecured loan with the same terms. LightStream offers to beat that rate by 0.10 percentage points. Conditions apply.
The trade-off is that LightStream doesn't offer prequalification. You have to apply to see your rate. A hard inquiry, made when you formally apply for credit, can lower your score by a few points temporarily. LightStream does accept joint applications.
SoFi personal loan
SoFi fits borrowers who need a larger loan. It lends $5,000 to $100,000 over two to seven years. APRs run up to 35.49%, starting at 6.99% with autopay and member discounts.
Watch the fee. If a partner bank makes your loan, the origination fee is 9.99%. On SoFi Bank loans, it runs 0% to 7%. You can also choose a no-fee loan at a higher interest rate.
You may get an extra 0.25 percentage point member discount. To be eligible, you need one of these within 31 days of funding: SoFi Plus, an eligible direct deposit, or at least $5,000 in deposits.
Happen Bank (formerly LendingClub) personal loan
LendingClub became Happen Bank on June 22, 2026, and joint applications are allowed. Its personal loan runs $1,000 to $75,000 repaid over 24 to 84 months. APRs reach up to 35.99%, from 5.96%.
Happen Bank's origination fee runs 0% to 8%, based on your credit history. When charged, the fee is deducted from the disbursement. On a $10,000 loan with an 8% fee, you'd get $9,200 but still repay the full $10,000. Happen doesn't charge a prepayment fee.
What Marcus offers now, and what it doesn't
Marcus is still in business. Goldman Sachs pulled back from consumer lending but kept its savings products.
| Product | Status |
|---|---|
| New personal loans | Not offered; Goldman announced its exit in January 2023 |
| Existing Marcus loans | Partly sold; serviced by a third party |
| Apple Card | Moving to Chase over about 24 months (announced January 2026) |
| Savings and CDs | Active |
| Checking | Not offered |
No new personal loans
Does Marcus by Goldman Sachs still offer personal loans? No. You can't apply for a new Marcus personal loan. Goldman began winding down new Marcus lending in January 2023. Existing loans are still being repaid, and Marcus now focuses on savings accounts and CDs. If a site suggests you can still apply, its information is likely out of date.
What happened to Marcus personal loans
Goldman sold Marcus loans to outside investors in 2023. Rithm Capital bought $1.4 billion of them. That purchase took place on June 20, 2023.
In December 2023, day-to-day servicing of those loans moved to Systems & Services Technologies (SST). A servicer is the company that collects your payments and answers your questions. Goldman stayed on as master servicer, which means it oversees SST's work.
Marcus credit cards: Apple Card moving to Chase
Goldman is leaving credit cards too. In January 2026, Apple and Chase announced a deal. Chase plans to replace Goldman Sachs Bank USA as the Apple Card issuer. The switch is expected to take about 24 months, pending regulatory approval. Goldman's CEO said the deal "substantially completes the narrowing of our focus in our consumer business."
Savings and CDs
Deposits are what Marcus does now. It offers a high-yield savings account and CDs. There's no checking account, no debit card, and no branch network.
Marcus customer service and reputation
Is Marcus by Goldman Sachs safe? It's a brand of Goldman Sachs Bank USA, and its accounts are FDIC-insured. Is Marcus closing? No. It still offers savings accounts and CDs. Its customer reviews, though, are rough.
| Source | Rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| BBB, Marcus by Goldman Sachs | A+ | 189 customer reviews; 1,634 complaints in the last 3 years |
| Trustpilot, marcus.com | 1.4 out of 5 ("Bad") | 244 reviews; 87% one-star |
BBB's letter grade reflects its opinion of how a company handles customer interactions. That's how an A+ can sit next to a long list of complaints. BBB's review page is being updated, so its star average isn't visible right now.
On Trustpilot, reviewers mention long hold times, getting transferred, and delays or blocks on transfers and withdrawals. Many of these complaints involve savings and CD accounts, not loans.
In October 2024, the CFPB ordered Goldman Sachs Bank USA to pay $19.8 million in redress, money returned to consumers. The order also set a $45 million civil penalty. The order was about the Apple Card, not personal loans.

If you have an existing Marcus personal loan
Your loan didn't disappear when Marcus stopped lending. Say you took out a Marcus loan in 2022 and your statements now come from a company you don't recognize. That may be the servicing transfer, not a scam. Still, check the notice before you pay anyone new. Here's how the common questions sort out:
- Who services your loan: Check your latest statement or any servicing-transfer notice. It names the company that takes your payments and runs your login. If Rithm bought your loan, SST services it.
- Want a lower rate: If your credit has improved, refinancing your personal loan could lower your cost. Compare the new APR and any fees with your current loan first.
- Need to borrow more: Marcus can't help. One of the lenders above might, or you can compare more options on our list of the best personal loans.
Marcus isn't taking new loan applications. Prequalify with two or three of these lenders where you can. Compare the offers side by side, and pick the one that fits.
